Hoban Design were commissioned to design this striking and contemporary new build property on a private estate in SW London.
The client bought the property following the previous owner’s failed attempt to construct a new build house. The legacy they left behind was a failing basement centred on the site, although a positive in spoil removal, it became a huge logistical issue to deal with in the early stages of construction.
The brief was to design a house that provided all the luxuries and amenities a family needs, not just for now, but to last for the next generation, becoming a hub for the grandchildren to return to year after year in the future.
Working with the client, who acted as interior designer, Hoban Design devised the sharp and striking design as a series of massing elements with a complimentary material palette of PortlandStone, Carlow Blue Limestone, Corten weathering steel and crisp white render.
The largest early challenge was to construct the new, larger and deeper basement around the existing failed shell. This involved sourcing specialist engineering design and in turn specialist piling contractors to use a ‘zero’ piling rig which could work to form the new perimeter around the existing opening on-site. The engineering was carried out by Price and Myers with a large solid concrete frame within a sheet piled perimeter. Due to the ground conditions, 25 tension piles were introduced under the hugely expansive basement slab to tie the whole structure down and to stop it gradually over-turning. A true engineering and logistical feat before even turning to the final visual elements of the build.
Internally the client’s ambition for a truly varied interior palette meant the level of interior detailing was extensive; from bespoke joinery, custom lighting details and elaborate bathroom arrangement to painstakingly set out tessellated tiling arrangements on walls and floors.
The result is a truly stunning 18,000sq.ft. one of a kind property, completed in 2019.
